Nightfall AI

F Nightfall DLP (Developer API + SaaS/cloud connectors)

The Nightfall API takes only a static bearer API key with no documented expiry, scoping, last-used data or API for rotation, and the endpoint agent is installed with that same kind of key. Into your clouds and most SaaS it is keyless (IAM role, impersonation, federation, app installs), but Claude Enterprise wants a pasted static key.

Inbound F

How a workload running anywhere authenticates to this product.

Static API key created in the Nightfall console and sent as an Authorization Bearer header. No OAuth, service-account token exchange or workload identity federation is documented.

The only documented machine credential is the console-created API key. The Windows endpoint agent is deployed with a static API_KEY and COMPANY_ID passed as MSI properties (baked into Intune/SCCM/GPO scripts or MST transforms), so the agent fleet also rests on a long-lived secret. The macOS manual-install page does not say how the downloaded package authenticates back to the tenant. No federation, OIDC, or short-lived token exchange was found in the public help center (help.nightfall.ai, which is public, not gated).

Outbound B

How this product reaches into your cloud, repos, or other SaaS.

Cross-account IAM role with external ID (AWS S3), service account impersonation (GCS), federated credential (Azure Blob) for Bring Your Own Bucket; vendor app installs / admin consent for Google Workspace (DWD), Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, GitHub App, Slack, Notion, Salesforce, Zendesk and Atlassian Marketplace apps. Claude Enterprise requires a pasted Compliance Access Key.

Checked: AWS S3, GCS and Azure Blob (Bring Your Own Bucket, all keyless); Google Workspace / Google Drive (DWD to Nightfall's client ID); Microsoft 365 (Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint) and Entra ID directory sync (admin consent); GitHub (GitHub App); Slack (OAuth install); Notion (public OAuth); Salesforce (Nightfall connected app, OAuth + PKCE); Zendesk (OAuth sign-in); Jira and Confluence (Atlassian Marketplace Connect app); Okta directory sync (OIN API Service Integration); Gmail/Exchange inline DLP (mail routing, no stored credential); Claude Enterprise (static key). Static keys handed over: Claude Enterprise Compliance Access Key. Judgment calls: Okta is counted keyless per cohort rule as an OIN service app, but the customer copies the Okta-generated client secret into Nightfall. Microsoft 365 is counted keyless because the customer only grants admin consent, but Nightfall then creates per-tenant app registrations with client secrets that expire and must be renewed by an admin, so long-lived Nightfall-held secrets do exist in your tenant. Salesforce refresh tokens are long-lived and bound to the authorizing user.

Hygiene for any static credential the product still issues

✗ Expiry enforceable
Key creation asks only for a name; no expiry field, default lifetime, or org policy is documented anywhere in the public help center.
  • help.nightfall.ai checked 2026-10-13
“Enter a name for the API key and click Create.”
✗ Rotation via API
Creation and deletion are documented only in the console; no key-management API endpoint was found.
  • help.nightfall.ai checked 2026-10-13
“If you believe one of your API Keys has been compromised, you should delete it through the Dashboard.”
  • help.nightfall.ai checked 2026-10-13
“You can click the Delete icon against an API key to delete the key.”
✗ Scoped keys
No per-key permissions, scopes, or resource restrictions are documented.
  • help.nightfall.ai checked 2026-10-13
“Your API keys carry many privileges, so be sure to keep them secure.”
✗ Last-used visible
The key list is documented as showing the redacted key only; no last-used timestamp is mentioned.
  • help.nightfall.ai checked 2026-10-13
“Once you close the window, the Your API Keys section will display your newly generated key, with the majority of the Key redacted.”
✗ Leak revocation
Nightfall does not appear on GitHub's supported secret scanning patterns page, partner or otherwise.

Notes

Graded the Nightfall Developer API (the surface a customer automates against) plus the connectors behind Nightfall's SaaS DLP, exfiltration prevention and posture products, which all share one console. The help center is public; nothing was gated. Absence-based hygiene fails (expiry, rotation API, scoping, last used) reflect that the public docs describe none of these; the console may show more than is documented. Grade moves to D with three of those documented, and higher only with short-lived or federated auth for the API and endpoint agent.
